Hello! My name is Kaustubh Vaghmare. I am currently working as a Data Scientist at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) under a project entitled Data Driven Initiatives in Astronomy and Biology headed by Prof. Ajit Kembhavi. My interests lie in understanding the challenges in the maintenance, storage, analysis and sharing of astronomical data and to study best practices to handle them. I am especially interested in the scope and applicability of conventional big data solutions within the field of Astronomy and Biology.
Before this, I was a PhD student at IUCAA and my thesis was titled Structure, Properties and Formation Histories of S0 Galaxies. As can be guessed from the thesis title, I am interested in observational studies of galaxies i.e. using their images and spectra to unravel their origins and inter-relationships with the cosmos.
I have also worked / am working in other areas of Astronomy - counterpart identifcation of X-ray sources, variability estimation of astrophysical sources and Astrostatistics. I am an avid user of the Python programming language and have spent a good deal of time encouraging the adoption of the language among my colleagues. I’ve also worked with the Indian Chapter of the Virtual Observatory.
Hope you have a good time here!
